EARLY INTERVENTION CAREER GUIDE

A career in early intervention is a perfect fit for those looking to improve the lives of children ages birth to three with developmental delays and disabilities such as cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, birth defects, and their families. Early intervention professionals must be dedicated, motivated, and skilled in order to succeed in early intervention, but the rewards are immeasurable. You will be helping children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders and Sensory/Developmental Disabilities improve their quality of life. In order to become an early childhood intervention professional, the first step is to obtain the necessary education-related degree(s) or state-specific license(s).

Early Intervention Education

Education is not only required to be an early intervention professional, but it’s also essential to successfully help children with developmental delays improve their lives. To begin a career path in early intervention, select a higher education institution with degrees offered in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language, Pathology, Human Service, or the education field.

After an undergraduate degree is obtained in one of these areas, it is recommended to obtain a post-graduate degree in a related field, such as early childhood education, special education or behavior therapy. You could also choose to purse a graduate degree in Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy.

Once you obtain your degree, you may then pursue your state-specific license or certification prior to starting your career.

Early Intervention Certifications and Licenses

In order to become a practicing early childhood intervention specialist, you must obtain a professional license or teaching certification from the state where you will be practicing. License requirements are specific to each state.
